Luke Hartley

Serengeti, Tanzania

Luke Hartley is a field and horseback guide currently working in northern Tanzania. He grew up in the Karoo region of South Africa, where large wildlife was far from prolific, and that taught him to appreciate every aspect of nature rather than only the big animals. He went on to work with a conservation team in the Kalahari, then moved to the greener game reserves of Zululand and up to the bushveld of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, before finding his way to Tanzania. Along the way he has been fortunate to witness some of the immense biodiversity Africa has to offer.

For Luke, a photograph is a rare moment in time, unique to the people who were present when it happened. He strives to make images that hold a story, not only for those behind the lens but also for the many who may never see such landscapes, animals and wild places for themselves. After so many hours in Land Cruisers, on foot and now on horseback, looking back through his images brings the memories flooding back. Africa has a wildness that is captivating and contagious, and to Luke, Africa is a feeling. Sharing that with everyone who wishes to experience it is his passion.
